The body is the place of the phenomenological experience of illness, whether for healthcare professionals who examine it using medical means or for sick people who experience it in their flesh. For the latter, the experience of illness is the theater of a paradoxical intrusion where strangeness arises from within, where comfort and obliviousness to one's existence in one's body usually reign. In this way, it calls into question the obviousness of the “mine-ness of the body ”. Thus, the effect of illness on the body questions the nature of our relationship with the body and reactivates the tension between life and thing that shapes our bodily experiences.

This article examines the triple injunction to bodily propriation under contemporary regimes of somatic subjectivation through the lens of illness. What form of “aesthetics of the self” might be possible under conditions - whether voluntary, necessary, or imposed - of “delegation of care of the self to others”? The experience of illness calls into question the utopia of somatic sovereignty shared by certain governmental and ethical-critical projects. The article explores some of the blind spots underlying “consent” to somatic care and envisions forms of bodily propriation arising not solely from individual effort but through collective processes, in which “shared mineness” attends to those for whom “bodily autonomy” and the “body as one’s own” are daunting.

The article proposes understanding the human body as a polyrhythm, drawing on the two Japanese psychiatrists Hisao Nakai and Bin Kimura. Nakai shows that schizophrenia involves distinct rhythms – illness, recovery. The patient's life is made up of physiological, affective, family, and social rhythms. Recovery corresponds to the gradual establishment of a rhythm of ease, while precipitation signals an excess of rhythm. Kimura analyzes the creation of the self as a rhythm between ante-festum and post-festum. Interpersonal relationships are polyrhythmic, like the improvisation of nurses in the face of patients. The "in-between" (aida) is a space where several voices resonate, blending past and present dialogues. The field also shows rhythms that do not intersect, particularly in palliative care. Patients' accounts reveal the interweaving of heterogeneous rhythms, from physical decline to the approach of death. Human experience is a polyrhythm, and care consists of perceiving these discrepancies, linking them, and creating an "in-between" that fosters coexistence.

Corps subtil

Drawing on the practice of Fernand Deligny and of the présences proches developed with autistic children in the Cévennes, this article examines corporeal modes of inscription beyond the usual frameworks of subjectivation and relationality. Confronted with gestures that resist a logic of meaning and with forms of action that are not addressed to another, an ethical praxis of the milieu is elaborated. Through an analysis of the coutumier, practices of cartography, and the toile arachnéenne, the article shows how a habitable milieu is constructed and how a form of common body unfolds within it, leading to a radical rethinking of the body beyond the paradigm of one’s own body and mineness.

In the context of Intensive Care, the living body, as conceived by Merleau-Ponty - that is a “posture to an actual or possible task” - is in the particular situation of being undone. The body no longer appears as a unity of potentialities; if it is acted, is by others - the humains surronding it and the field of medical techniques employed -; but is compelled to suspend is own agentivity. How in such a context, does this dynamism of the body of the patient not lead to the erasure of their identity? How can this body, acted by others, remain their own? To answer this question, we will show how the interaction between healthcare professionals and patients constitutes what we propose what we propose to call "a common situation", wich initiates, in the contexte of Intensive Care, the possibilité of a return to oneself.

To think of the body's mine-ness not as something that definitively extracts us from the natural world, but rather as something that spells out the many tacit links and anchors that help us to be in being? By neglecting it too much, are we not encouraging a disembodied interpretation of our ways of making the world, the harmful effects of which we are now experiencing, unraveling, through the numbness and atrophy of our experiences, our existential links with non-humans and more-than-humans? Is this not what, conversely, the liminal experience of the body attempts to describe, thinking of the body's limits not as formal contours but as open borders offered to the world, allowing the infinite variations of sensation that constitute it and make possible an experience of the world to live?

Drawing on a practice-based research project conducted within a psychiatric hospital setting, this article explores how objects and spatial arrangements designed as part of the Re-confort research engage patients in sensory experiences capable of restoring continuity between the self, others, and the surrounding environment. Through the lens of the concepts of the “Skin-Ego” (Anzieu, 1996), “transitional objects and spaces” (Winnicott, 1971), “dwelling” (Heidegger, 1951), and “heterotopias” (Foucault, 1967), the article examines the conditions under which a body-as-one’s-own may emerge, experienced as a site of reappropriation and soothing.

Foucault delivered, in 1974, three successive lectures at the University of Rio de Janeiro. Although they were subsequently published in separate journals, they have never been brought together or examined as a unified whole. This article argues, however, that they illuminate two fundamental aspects of his work. First, Foucault no longer brackets the question of the epistemic value of human knowledge. His thought can therefore no longer be regarded as “relativist”, contrary to an interpretation that has become widespread since Habermas’s critique. Second, the knowledge generated by disciplinary apparatuses and that developed within Foucault’s philosophy rests on largely analogous mechanisms. Both rely on an epistemology that is simultaneously constructionist, realist, and disciplinary: constructionist, because theories are less faithful representations of reality than fictitious reconstructions of it; realist, because some norms of production inspired by these theories are objectively more effective than others; and disciplinary, because scientific knowledge is produced by and for the objective enhancement of the effectiveness of these apparatuses, even when Foucault warns against the harmful effects of discipline or its instrumentalization.
