Since two decades how to convince more young Japanese to join the Self-Defense Forces has become a troublesome issue for the political circles and the experts of defense policy as well. As a matter of fact, the ministry of Defense recently has to face two major problems. On the one hand, the SDF are impacted by the ageing of the population, and more specifically by the shortage of the 18-26 age group which is the target for recruitment, On the other hand, the SDF need personal resources experienced in the production and use of new high technology weaponry to cope with growing and differentiating levels of conflicts in the world. Thus, this article explores the various policies launched by the successive Japanese governments to counter the negative implications of an ageing society on the SDF operational capacities, and to make the military career more attractive, in a context requiring for Japan a revision of the pacifism doctrine and the lifting of inhibitions which still impede the rooting of the military in postwar society.
