      <title>Le désastre des monts Hakkōda</title>
      <link>http://interfas.univ-tlse2.fr/etudes-japonaises/326</link>
At the end of January 1902, during a winter drill organized in the Hakkoda Mounts by the 5th infantry regiment located at Aomori, nearly 200 soldiers froze to death, in what remains in history as the worst mountain accident, excluding air disasters. After having recalled the historical background of the tragedy – the preparation of the upcoming war with Russia – and retraced the main steps of the drama, the present contribution questions the responsabilities of the military staff, the reactions of both the Army and public opinion when the announcement was made public. It also tracks the traces left by the incident in contemporary Japan, after years of oblivion. </description>
